The Alt-Ac Job Beat Newsletter Post 17
Happy August Everyone!
The advice for this newsletter is in reference to how many jobs have been posting salary ranges. Any particular job may be different, but often if you get to an HR stage and discuss the opportunity, the companies are really only interested in hiring at the lower end of the range. So offhand you should take those upper ranges as "this position can grow to that salary", not "I can negotiate that salary on day 1".
JOBS
Apologies, but in a migration I messed up and corrupted/deleted by accident many of my google sheets, including the job sheets. The new link is here.
Unfortunately part of the motivation to do the job board was not so much to find up to date jobs, but as a place for people to look and see the companies/jobs available, as well as salary ranges. So even if you click a link and it says "job posting is closed", it will still be good to look at that companies current openings.
I have taken the opportunity to make the sheet a bit easier to filter according to different characteristics. And if folks are interested in helping put in jobs let me know! (Always willing to have help for the newsletter.)
CREATING LLC FOR CONSULTING WORK
A bit random additional advice, I have had a few individuals ask me about making an LLC to do consulting work. Creating an LLC is not necessary (I did various stat consulting on the side in grad school). If you make a sole owned LLC (which just involves filling out some paperwork for your state), it does not change your taxes at all. All the work through your LLC is just the same as taking 1099 consulting work (so do not spend it all, as you will need to pay taxes on that work at the end of the year).
Having the LLC can make you look marginally more professional though, and allows you to get an EIN for W9's (so I don't need to use my personal SSN). And some government contracts want you to have a DUNs number (which I think you need an LLC to get).
Crime De-Coder is more a website front for work I was already doing than anything substantively different. I suspect the majority of folks on this newsletter could do similar side-hustle stat or computer programming work in a consultant capacity.
EXAMPLE SCIENTIST
Grant Drawve, PhD in CJ from Little Rock, went a route similar to myself. Was a tenured professor at Arkansas, but then jump shipped to the private sector. He is currently VP of Research and Innovation at CAP Index (a company that does crime analysis in the insurance sector). Check out his career path on his LinkedIn profile.
